In 2018 the Village of Sodus Point received a grant from New York Sea Grant to fund a handicap launch system at the end of South Ontario Street.
The site was chosen after reviewing five different options. The South Ontario street location was identified in the three different plans for the Village and detailed in the Great Sodus Bay Waterfront Initiative. In 2012 the Village Planning board developed a plan for access areas along Sodus Bay and also identified South Ontario Street.
South Ontario Street is currently the conveyance point for roughly 1/3 of the Village’s stormwater drainage, an estimated 52 acres. The area represents the first phase of a drainage project sponsored by the Wayne County Soil and Water Conservation District. This phase is anticipated to be completed in July 2019.
At present the location has a problem with unsightly iron bacteria caused by legacy upstream infrastructure and is also infested with invasive species. These problems are being addressed with a planned rain garden at the end of the street within the boundaries of the proposed launch location. The Village recognizes that local infrastructure sustainability is critical to long term economic development. GI and stormwater management can help meet a wide range of community needs. With its network of natural environment components and green and blue spaces; GI provides multiple social, economic and environmental benefits as well as set the stage for eco-tourism and most importantly improvement of the water quality of Sodus Bay. Stormwater educational activities will accompany the project. When completed the location will have environmental education interpretive signage and an invasive species disposal box.
There will be an annual clean-up day.
