Village Update – March 14, 2019
You have all received the Village Hall Proposal. Many of you have reached out both by phone and email to ask questions and provide me your thoughts. I am very happy to share that most of the feedback has been very positive. There are certainly still those with concerns. There will be a public Q&A session on Saturday at the fire house beginning at 10am.
Congressman Katko understands our concerns both with water levels and with the east break wall. It is safe to say that all of our Federal and State legislators realize the potential issues and are advocating for us. The biggest issue, other than the fact Plan 2014 exists is the lack of commissioners for both the US and Canada on the IJC. The water has remained at the current level for over a month now. The most recent forecast indicates we will have a good summer.
Since we are in the midst of developing our budget for the 2019/2020 fiscal year, I wanted to talk briefly about tax rates. The current village tax rate is $4.75/1000. This is the lowest in Wayne County by a significant amount. At that rate we provide a very high level of service. The next lowest is the Village of Sodus at $10.21/1000. The highest is Clyde at $16.67/1000. Tax rates are calculated by dividing the desired tax levy by the assessed property value in the village. For the 2019/2020 budget our tax levy will remain the same at $579,000 however our assessed property values dropped by $113,225 causing the tax rate to go up slightly to $4.76/1000. It is the tax levy that the governor wants to keep at no more than ‘2%’. Unfortunately, this comes with no mandate on NYS not to pass along more things we need to pay for with no money.
